this page you can find some useful strategies to learn vocabulary. Try to apply
them consciously while you are reading:
Do not stop at every word you don't know. Identify the key words of
the reading and look them up in the dictionary.
Word formation can also help you in understanding an unknown word. Look
at the word to see if you recognise another word: be
aware of prefixes and suffixes.
Be aware of the syntax of the word and its function in the sentence.
-
What part of speech is it? -
What function does it have in the sentence?
Use context to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words:
- Be aware of transitional
words that can give you the clue. -
Look for the further explanation of technical words in the same text. -
Look for synonyms of the word that may be in the following sentences. -
Look at pictures and captions that go with the reading text.
To reinforce and develop the vocabulary that you learn you can:
- Classify words
into meaningful groups. -
Read several texts or articles on the same topic, so that you will learn
a set of words related to it. |
